Gate Chain Material Options
- Option (1) Steel‚ Zinc Plated
- Option (2) Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel
- Option (3) Steel‚ Black Finish
This gate chain latch is made of premium steel, strong and reliable, weatherproof and reusable, and not easy to break, serving you for a long time.
Easy to Use: Firstly, attach the two Carbine Hooks to both ends of gate chain, then wrap it around gate fence, lastly fasten the two Carbine Hooks together.
This 3mm gate latch chain assembly is a practical, ready-to-use solution for any gate that needs a simple, reliable means of being held closed. Supplied as a complete 60cm chain latch with two 5mm carbine hooks already attached, it requires no tools to install and no additional fittings to purchase - loop the chain through or around the gate and post, engage both hooks, and the gate is secured.
Chain latches have been the standard method for securing domestic and agricultural gates for generations, and for good reason. They are quick to operate single-handed, they don't jam, freeze, or corrode in the way that bolt latches and spring mechanisms can, and they tolerate slight misalignment between gate and post that would defeat a conventional latch. A chain gate latch is also inherently adjustable - the length of chain between the hooks means minor variations in gate position, post width, or mounting height don't matter in the way they would with a rigid fitting.
The 60cm assembled length suits the majority of garden gate, side gate, driveway pedestrian gate, allotment gate, and field gate applications where the chain simply needs to span the gap between gate rail and post. It works equally well as a child safety chain latch on swimming pool enclosures, play areas, and garden boundaries where gates need to stay reliably closed at all times without a conventional bolt or latch mechanism. For farm and agricultural use, this latch chain can be engaged and released quickly from foot or mounted, making it the natural choice for any gate on a working route.
Choosing the Right Finish
The three material options cover the most common installation environments. Zinc plated steel is the standard specification for sheltered garden gates, outbuilding doors, and internal yard gates where occasional moisture is present but sustained exposure is not a concern. The Marine Grade 316 stainless steel gate latch chain is the correct choice for coastal locations, exposed agricultural settings, marine environments, or anywhere the chain will be subject to salt air, frequent wetting, or prolonged outdoor exposure - stainless resists corrosion at the material level rather than relying on a surface coating that can wear away. The black finish option is the most popular for decorative and aesthetic applications, sitting cleanly against painted ironwork, timber gates, and contemporary garden designs where a standard silver or bright zinc chain would look industrial.
Using as a Gate Lock Chain
This chain latch assembly can also serve as a simple gate lock chain when security is a consideration alongside convenience. Threading the chain through the gate and a fixed ring on plate or staple on plate before closing it with a padlock rather than a carbine hook converts the latch chain into a lockable gate chain lock arrangement - providing a meaningful deterrent against casual entry without the expense or permanence of a dedicated gate lock. For applications where this is the primary purpose, replacing both carbine hooks with a single padlock-closed loop gives a cleaner, more secure chain lock for gate use.
For heavier duty gate chain requirements - large farm gates, commercial access points, industrial yard gates, or any application where greater chain weight and diameter is needed - Ashley Chains stocks a wider range of chains for gates available by the metre and in heavier gauges.
